Cambridge, MA – Metalmark today announced the successful completion of the pilot of its breakthrough self-cleaning commercial air purifier at New England MedWaste. The first of its kind self-cleaning commercial air purification system vastly simplifies maintenance, slashes total operating costs, and reduces filter waste. Metalmark delivers HEPA-grade air cleaning, removing 99.97% of infectious aerosols — such as viruses, bacteria, and mold — wildfire smoke, VOCs, PM 2.5, and PM 1.0.
After Metalmark’s proprietary HEPA-grade filter media removes the particulates, its patent-pending catalytic system destroys the accumulated pollutants, thereby cleaning the filter. This ground-breaking process extends filter lifetime for up to five years or more, which is 10X traditional HEPA filter life.
The pilot was conducted in a typical office space near Boston, MA with continuous air quality monitoring during a six-week period of normal occupancy and activities. High-definition data collected every 15 seconds in the pilot showed rapid, significant reductions in airborne particles including PM 2.5, bacteria, and mold, and VOC levels.
New England MedWaste employees reported substantial subjective improvements in the air and odors, too. One said, “We had an immediate change in our office air quality when the machine came in and an immediate change as soon as it left. Even the drivers have made comments about it. And these are guys who are pretty oblivious to different smells.”
Metalmark co-founder and CEO Sissi Liu said, “Metalmark has been developing and improving our sustainable, self-cleaning air purification system for five years. We are thrilled with the results of the pilot, and especially the reaction of the people working in the office. This keeps us on track to ship units in early 2023.”
Metalmark’s innovation radically transforms the cost/reward equation for indoor air quality. People today generally spend 90% of their time indoors, although indoor air tends to be two-to-five times more polluted than outdoor air. Before Metalmark’s breakthrough, the need to reduce risks of infectious disease transmission through the air, and new climate challenges such as the broader spread of wildfire smoke, often conflicted with reducing building energy use, mitigating inflationary costs, and the deep decarbonization mandates of corporations and universities.
About Metalmark
First inspired by the nanostructures of the metalmark butterfly’s wings, Metalmark Innovations, PBC, creates sustainable products from the nanoscale up for dealing with climate, sustainability, and health challenges. Metalmark developed Tatama, the self-renewing air cleaning solution that brings freshened air to classrooms, medical facilities, offices, and more while requiring far less maintenance than other commercial air cleaners, along with the benefits of lower ventilation, energy use, and cost.
